Amalio Burguet, guitar maker
Amalio was born in 1951 in Catarroja, a small town near the sunny city of Valencia. From a very young age he showed a great ability to make guitars. After working in various workshops, he soon became won over by the magic of the instrument with six strings - the Spanish Guitar.
In Valencia the tradition of producing the best guitars in the world had always existed, but at the same time he admired some guitars that were made by single guitarmakers. Using the best of both worlds to create a guitar within reach of everybody: Students and musicians.
During the conservatoire years, special attention was given to every detail associated with materials, temperature and humidity and the way of making the instrument.
Contrary to most guitarmakers he never worked alone. At first he had three craftsmen and then a complete workforce in the new workshop opened in 1994 -ten years after it all started.
Happily the original idea was a great success and the guitars were well received by the market and musicians who always have. With this philosophy, new ideas were continually introduced to make a better guitar.
The process
There is a fundamental aspect before the process of making the guitar, the selection of wood from distinct natural sources. Amalio Burguet looked for the best wood in the world to make each piece with the best quality possible.
Concert guitars were made of Ebony and German pine, Cedar from Honduras or Canada. For the most exclusive concert models, Koa was used, a wood very difficult to find as it comes from India or Brazil. Flamenco guitars, on the other hand are always made of Spanish Cypress.
Once the wood has been received, the most important part of the process begins, even more important than the selection, the drying treatment. Burguet concentrates his knowledge and experience in the treatment of living materials with great care.
The strick vigilance of humidity is a fundamental neccessity to guarantee that the wood is in perfect condition at the time of assembly.
